Nurinuki Water

In the precinct of Dairenji Temple, famous water, Nurinuki Water used to gush out. Its name reportedly derives from that the water was used to [boil silk to soften to] make Emperor Tenji’s clothes. It is also said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited Dairenji Temple and had tea made with this water. He liked the tea so much that his servant came to draw the water nearly every day. The water is also used to brew sake. In the Teikinorai, a text book of common general knowledge, in the early Muromachi Period [around the 14th century], the water was introduced as “Nurinuki of Otsu, Otsu’s sake made of Nurinuki water”.
