Umagami Shrine

It is also called Kosho Sosei Daijingu Shrine. It was originally located in the premises of the office where means of transportation such as men or horses used to be arranged in Otsu-shuku, [one of the post towns of the Tokaido road]. But later it was relocated to its current location, the precinct of Nagara Shrine in 1910. According to the shrine’s history, due to an epidemic during the Kanei Era [1624–1644], a great number of cows and horses died; therefore, the sacred spirit from Yoshidasha Shrine in Kyoto was shared to pray to ward off the epidemic. Since its foundation, the shrine has served as the local tutelary in Otsu-shuku and has been worshipped by horse owners. It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi also worshipped this shrine, and it is now deemed as one of the Sanba Shrines [shrines for oxen and horses].
