Chikatsuo Shrine

The deity enshrined in this shrine is Hondawake no Mikoto [also known as Emperor Ojin]. It is said that originally the sacred spirit of Hachimanshin from another shrine was shared to found this shrine; therefore, it also used to be called Chikatsuo Hachiman Shrine. When retired Emperor Go-shirakawa visited Ishiyamadera Temple in 1173, he reportedly ordered Priest Koyu, the head priest of Ishiyamadera Temple, to found this shrine as a shrine for prayer of Ishiyamadera Temple. There is Genju-an, the hut which is known as the place where Matsuo Basho stayed. In autumn, the Basho Festival takes place.
