Remains of the Genjū Hermitage

In the 2nd year of the Jokyo Era (1685), Matsuo Bashō, who visited Otsu for the first time, fell in love with Otsu’s natural beauty, and gathered many students. One of the Genjū Hermitage’s students, Suganuma Kyokusui, who repaired his uncle’s hermitage which is in the precincts of the Chikatsuo shrine, offered it to Bashō . This place is also known for the famous literary composition “Genjū Hermitage Chronicles”. The building of the Genjū Hermitage is newly built and opened in 1992.
