Former Nango Weir

The River Seta is the only river which flows from Lake Biwa. Adjusting the amount of water of the River Seta was always difficult from ancient times, and the surrounding areas used to suffer from flooding. The former Nango Weir was constructed by Japanese engineers the year following the Great Flood of Lake Biwa that occurred in 1896. The weir was a large facility operated by human power. It was totally dedicated to the water control of the catchment area and was a monumental facility. Even now you can see the brick pillars of the weir on both banks. In 1961, the second generation of the weir with a modern facility was constructed slightly downstream of the former weir.
