Lighthouse of Dekejima

This is an eight-meter high wooden lighthouse. Around this area boatwrights used to live from olden days, and many boats used to come and go for repairs or waiting for favorable winds. This area was also the narrowest part of Lake Biwa and had many rock reefs which constantly caused boat accidents. To maintain the safety of the waterway on the lake, this lighthouse was built in 1875. In 1951, the lighthouse ended its service and started deteriorating; however, thanks to a local campaign, it was renovated in 1973.
