Kasugayama Burial Mound Cluster

It is located on the edge of the eastern Katata Hill. This consists of more than 200 burial mounds and is one of the largest clusters in the region of the western side of the lake. The first burial mound of this cluster was the Kasugayama Burial Mound, a keyhole-shaped tumulus which was built around the mid-5th century. The burial mounds were intensively built in the late 6th century and seem to have been built until the early 7th century. Their burial methods vary including horizontal stone chambers, stone coffins and wooden coffins that were buried directly. Connections with the powerful clans who used to live in this area such as Wanibe no Omi, Ono no Omi and Mano no Omi are strongly suggested.
