Ukimido Hall

A high-ranking priest of the Yokawa area of Hieizan Enyakuji Temple, Eshin Sozu Genshin reportedly established this hall, wishing for safe waterway transportation and the relief of people’s suffering. The beauty of the Ukimido Hall floating on the lake is widely known as a recurring theme in the paintings titled Wild geese returning home at Katata that the series, The Eight Views of Omi Province, are composed of. Many literati such as Matsuo Basho and painters visited there and created haiku, tanka poems and paintings. The current building was rebuilt in 1937, and the pillars were changed to reinforced concrete, but the original charm still remains.
