Izu Shrine

The deity enshrined in this shrine is Oyamazumi no Mikoto who is known as the deity born to Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto. According to the shrine’s history, it originates from the high priest Son’i of Enryakuji Temple, who was traveling over the provinces on foot, shared the sacred spirit of Izu Mishima Myojin to found this shrine in 892. It used to be called Katata Omiya Shrine in the Muromachi Period [between the 14th and 16th centuries], and was worshipped as the general local tutelary deity of Katata, the area which had the great privilege of the waterway transportation on the lake.
