Modoroki Shrine

Fujiwara no Tabiko is enshrined as the deity of the shrine. Tabiko was born in this place and became the wife of Emperor Kanmu. She then moved to Kyoto and gave birth to Emperor Junna; however, she died young at the age of 30 in Saiin, Kyoto. After her death, she was buried under the nagi tree in her hometown according to her will. The cut stump of the withered nagi tree can still be found in the precinct as a sacred tree. The name of this shrine “Modoroki” [meaning coming back] derives from the fact that Tabiko came back to her birth place.
