Tenno Shrine

The deity enshrined in this shrine is Susano-o no Mikoto. According to the shrine’s history, it originates from when the sacred sprit of Gozu Tenno from Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto was shared to found this shrine in 966, and it was originally called Wani Gozu Tennosha Shrine. The name was changed to Tenno Shrine in the Meiji Era [of the late 19th century]. The main shrine was reportedly built in 1324. It employed a gable roof which was rare in the country, and was designated as an Important Cultural Property.
