Former Site of Otsu-shuku Honjin Inns

Honjin is an accommodation facility for feudal lords and court nobles placed in post towns during the Edo Period [between the 17th and mid-19th centuries]. Otsu-shuku had two honjin inns: one was the residence of Bizenya Kyuzaemon and that of Osakaya Kaemon in this area. Otsu was the junction of the Hokkokukaido Road and Tokaido Road. It was also the hub of transportation for the lake, which led Otsu to its extreme prosperity. The honjin inns at that time were huge, and the view of Lake Biwa from the top of the building on the third floor was apparently superb.
