Ushiogoe Road

It is a road from Kokubu, Otsu City passing through Mt. Ushio and reaching Koyama, Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City. It has served as the pilgrimage route to Ushio Kannon [Hogonji Temple] in Mt. Ushio since ancient times, and nowadays, it is also serves as an excellent hiking route. Ushio Kannon used to be called Kiyomizu Okuno-in.
According to the lore, it is because the source of Otowa Falls at Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto is located in Mt. Otowa to the north of Mt. Ushio. There are also two stone sign posts engraved as “Mt. Ushio Kannon-michi Path”; one with the year 1755 in Oiwake-cho and another with the year 1843 in Hotarudani, both in Otsu City, which shows visitors came both from Kyoto and Otsu directions.
