Tomikawa Carved Buddha on a Rock Face (Mimidare Fudo)

It is located three kilometers from Shishitobibashi Bridge towards Shigaraki. Cross the little bridge called Fudobashi Bridge on the lower left hand side of the road and go up a mountain road for about 20 minutes, and you will find the carved Buddha on a rock face in front. On the 20-meter high rock face, Amida Nyorai in the center, and Kannon and Seishi Bodhisattvas are carved, which form the Amitabha triad. On the right, a figure of Fudo Myo-o and the year 1369 are also engraved.
Mineral water springs from around the right ear of the principal image, Amida Nyorai. The water wets the rock making it dark brown; therefore, it is called Mimidare Fudo, [which means runny-ear Fudo], and is worshipped as a Buddha taking over people’s ear diseases.
