Horakuji Temple

This Tendai Sect temple is located at the foot of Mt. Myoken. It was reportedly founded by Jikaku Daishi Ennin under the imperial request from Emperor Montoku in the Heian Period [between the late 8th and 12th centuries]. The principal image, a wooden seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai is normally kept hidden from public view, but is revealed every 12 years, and was designated as an Important Cultural Property.
