Sakunado Shrine

According to the shrine’s records, it originates from Nakatomi no Murajikane, the Minister of the Right of the Otsu capital, conducting a purification ceremony here and building the shrine in 669. Since then, it has been known as one of the seven places for purification along with Karasaki Shrine. Even now, the Mitarashi Festival, a purification ceremony, takes place every July 31.
Here, Oishi, is known as the honganchi [place written in a family register] of the Oishi Clan of which Oishi Kuranosuke was a member. Kuranosuke is famous for the forty-seven ronin of Ako, and Chushingura [the title of the story based on these ronin]. There is the picture of a mounted warrior on a wooden board which was donated by Kuranosuke’s grandfather, Yoshikatsu, to wish for his continued luck in the fortunes of war in this shrine.
