Shunnyu Naigu (890–953)

Shunnyu Naigu was a Shingon Sect Monk, and a grandson of Sugawara no Michizane.

He received religious precepts in Todaiji Temple and went through ascetic training of the Shingon Sect. He followed the teachings of Kangen, a disciple of Rigen Daishi Shobo. Later, he had a denpokanjo ceremony (to confer the title of master called Ajari). He was recommended to be the head priest of Daigoji Temple; however, Shunnyu firmly declined due to health reasons and secluded himself in Ishiyamadera Temple. In Ishiyamadera Temple, he devoted himself to the study and ascetic training of Esoteric Buddhism. His such firm faith was greatly revered, and many people visited to learn from him.

In 921, his master, Kangen, was ordered by Emperor Daigo to go to offer clothes and the title of “taishi” [daishi] to the Kobo Daishi for his mausoleum at Mt. Koya, and Shunnyu accompanied Kangen. During the ceremony of changing the clothes of the statue of Kobo Daishi, it is said that a fragrance was attached to Shunnyu’s hands when he touched a knee of the statue and it never faded. Besides, the fragrance transferred to the scriptures owned by Shunnyu, and these were called Nioi no Shogyo. These scriptures are referred to as the finest of sacred treasures in Ishiyamadera Temple.
