Former Otsu Army Cemetery

In 1873, the government promulgated the Conscription Ordinance, and every adult male became liable for military service. In 1875, the 9th Regiment of the Army Infantry was formed. Otsu had become a more military-based city since the regiment was stationed near current Goryo-cho. To remind us of such history, there is an army cemetery discreetly located in the mountain to the north of Hayao Shrine where soldiers who died in the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 as well as the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and two world wars rest.
