Former Osakayama Tunnel

It is a 664-meter long tunnel which was completed in 1880 when the railway between Kyoto and Otsu was opened. At that time, it was common to turn to English people for guidance for railroading; however, this tunnel was constructed only by Japanese for the first time in Japan. Although it was abolished in 1921 due to a change of the route of the Tokaido Line, it was designated as a railway monument.
