Togakushi Shrine

This shrine has been worshipped as the tutelary of Hiratsumura village since ancient times. The sacred spirit of Togashi Daimyojin from Shinano Province [now Nagano Prefecture], was reportedly shared to found this shrine in the mid-Heian Period [between 10th and 11th centuries]. The deity enshrined is Ama no Tajikarao no Kami who appears in Japanese mythology. The deity has great strength as he opened Ama no Iwato, the rock cave door, to pull out the sun goddess Amaterasu from her retreat [and return light to the world].
