Nango Goryo Shrine

The deity enshrined in this shrine is Kibi no Makibi, the Minister of the Right, a government official, who also used to be a scholar in the Nara Period [in the 8th century]. This shrine was reportedly established by sharing the sacred spirit from Shimogoryo Shrine in Kyoto in February 1373. Goryo Shrines are the place where revengeful spirits of people who died an unnatural death due to political changes and other reasons are enshrined, and they used to be worshipped as deities who relieve and protect people from epidemics. The sacred spirit is believed to have been shared due to the same belief to found this shrine. An annual festival is held on May 5, where the transferal with a rare carp-figured sacred palanquin takes place.
