Annen and Nageashi Benten

Once, there was a great scholar and monk called Annen. Although he mastered his study in Hieizan, his life was hard. One day, he asked Benzaiten to bring him good luck. To his surprise, Benzaiten threw her leg to her front and answered, “If you lick my foot, I will bring you good luck.” He was indeed angry and reportedly immobilized her feet with his powerful will.
Takakannon Gonshoji Temple is reportedly the place where Annen practiced ascetic training, and there is a vermilion-lacquered Bentensha Shrine on the side of the temple. The Benzaiten here is the one whose foot was immobilized, and has a bad-mannered appearance as her leg is still thrown in front.
