Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon Sect, is said to have died on March 21, 835. Every 21st of the month is a monthly observance of his death, and is the day of a special relation with Kobo Daishi’s passing.
Miei-ku memorial services are solemnly conducted in the Mieido in Ishiyamadera Temple. Miei-ku is a memorial service with an iconography of the deceased founder on the anniversary of his death.
January the 21st, the first day of the memorial service of the year is called Hatsu-Kobo, and December the 21st, the last day of the memorial service of the year, is called Shimai-Kobo.
